YSR AND MADHAV RAO SCINDIA AND PLANE CRASH
On 2 September after we finished the weekly Vishnu Sahastraam recitation at the house of Sri K.N.Rao., he opened a television channel and found the same news--the missing chopper which carried Y.S.R.Reddy known better in political circles as YSR the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.
Did Sri Rao have his horoscope was the question two or three of us asked and he took out an unverified horoscope of YSR with Dhanu lagna of 8 July 1949. Presuming the horoscope to be correct, I said that there was no chance of YSR surviving in the dasha of Rahu-Mercury-Saturn.
Next day, on 3 September Sri Rao told me that he got from a lover of astrology a different horoscope of YSR. Here the date was the same but the time of birth was 22/42 and the place of birth was Pulivendla. The earlier gave the place of birth as Jammalamadugu and the time of birth as 18:19: with Dhanu lagna rising.
In this horoscope has Kumbha lagna. At the time of death , YSR, was running RahuVenus and Venus the lord of fourth house of vehicles in the sixth house of accidents appealed to me.
Some other events known to us were verified but not many are known except what appeared in the newspapers. The television channels, mostly in English kept discussing the missing chopper of YSR whole the day on 2nd September as through other news were least significant. Sri Rao said that these English channels did not give even one twentieth so much coverage to Madhavrao Scindia while he was a national figure unlike YSR who was only a politician of a south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It was ludicrous and total loss of sense of proportion.
On 3rd September television channels continued in the same vein after it was known that all the five passengers on the ill fated chopper had died in an accident on the Rudrakonda hillock where YSR’s helicopter crashed with heavy rain and cloudy sky reducing visibility to a fatally dismal level.
Why two horoscopes I wondered. Sri Rao told us, as he says in the class room also often, politicians keep misleading astrologers by passing on wrong birth data. Why was it so in this case is not clear. But the Kumbha lagna horoscope is said to have come from a close friend of YSR and is said to be reliable. At any rate, it is study of the horoscope of a person who is dead and will be forgotten very soon. Astrologers will not even need this horoscope to predict about future political events of India as we longer need Madhavrao Sindia’s horoscope.
Horscopes of YSR and Madhav Rao Scindia
From the facts known about YSR the Kumbha lagna horoscope can be used for three good reasons
a) Mars the tenth lord aspecting his own house which is the tenth house made him dictatorial type of politician who was a terror for his enemies.
b) This Mars aspected by Saturn gave him love for masses whose welfare he kept in the mind.
c) The aspect of Jupiter on this tenth lord gave him idealism and combined with Mars the will and determination to get implemented his well known welfare schemes.
Kumbha (Aquarius) lagna horoscope
At the time of his death, YSR was running the Vimshottari dasha of Rahu-VenusVenus. In Dwisaptati Sama Dasha, it was Saturn-Venus-Ketu. There is a research on Ketu in the eighth house by Shri Shiv Raj Sharma in which it has been repeatedly shown that Ketu in the eighth house gives painful death. Venus is common in both nakshatra dashas and the fourth lord in the sixth house aspected by retrograde Jupiter the second and the ninth lord. That explains a rich father and the Venus antardasha acquiring maraka qualities through Jupiterean aspect.
In Chara dasha it is Makar-Dhanu and Dhanu is well known for such events, rise or fall and violent deaths etc. In Jaimini’s Sthira dasha, it is Karka-Dhanu.
Repeating antardashas
It is very interesting to see that in nakshatra dashas Venus is repeating and Venus is in the sixth house of accidents. In Jaimini dashas Dhanu antardashas are repeating and Dhanu is the rashi of accidents or sudden sickness though it has given rise also to many.
Rahu on the day of death
There is a very notable point. On the death of YSR the degrees of Rahu in Makar was five degrees and forty three minutes and it was exactly on the natal Jupiter which is five degrees and thirty three minutes.
Back to television channels, strangely all the well known English channels were discussing and showing the accident of YSR while the Hindi channels were showing the immersion ceremony of Lord Ganesha on the sacred day of Anant Chaturdashi which fell on 3 September in 2009.
Did Madhavrao Scindia get even one twentieth so much tv coverage ? Or even P.V.Narasimha Rao who was India’s prime minister for five years and had steered Indian economy from direst of straits into the safer zone of safety?
YSR and Scindia
A comparison can be made of the deaths of both of these.
· In the case of YSR the fourth lord Venus is in the sixth house aspected by the second lord Jupiter.
· In the case of Madhav Rao Scindia, the fourth and sixth lords are in the eighth house aspected by retrograde second lord, Jupiter.
· The eighth house in both cases contains malefics and is airy rashis. Both died in air accidents.
· The eighth house or eighth lord has a connection with airy signs.
· The connection between the fourth and third house and/or their lords.
· Mutual aspects or conjunction of Saturn and Mars.
· Ketu in the eighth house from lagna or Moon.
· Seventh and eighth lords are in the fifth house.
· The second lord is retrograde in both cases and aspects the eighth house.
· Atmakaraka and Bhatrikarka has aspectual relation in both. Mars is either third lord or is connected to the third house.
Neither of them were great men not had anything that could win the admiration of people. YSR was a better manipulator of mass media and mass mind while Madhavrao was a royal figure, with pristine royal grandeur and strayed into politics and succeeded in a limited way.
To the credit of YSR it will have to be said that he got implemented welfare schemes with an iron will and steely hands and the benefits reached masses as had never happened before in any state.
Who will ever remember YSR? It is not in the hands of anybody to bestow on anyone greatness or immortality. A press well manipulated, a slavish media imitating each other to get higher trp has gone to a mad extent to make him look great. Some of his welfare schemes did do some good to some but was inflated beyond rational limits. When God wants to bestow greatness and immortality a stage is set and a full time table chalked out.
DR. BV RAMAN REMEMBERED
If Dr. Raman had been alive he would have completed his ninety seventh year on 8 August and entered the ninety eighth. Why am I remembering him now when it is neither his anniversary nor is there any visible justifiable reason? My answer is purely personal.
Recently a ponga pandit who claims to be an astrologer, knows English and has even written a massively dull and unintelligent book as a commentary on a well known astrological classic, attacked Dr. Raman saying that he had learnt his Jaimini astrology wrongly from a pandit and reading his books has misled astrologers !! He made this statement in a letter to me.
It is this outrageous statement which annoyed me because what we astrologers owe to Dr. Raman should never be forgotten. To talk of him in personal tones let me make some recollections.
My astrological education in Hindi When I learnt astrology in my childhood with my mother initiating me into it, I could read Hindi only well and understand. My knowledge of English was elementary. Though my mother subscribed to the Astrological Magazine she alone read it and none else in our family.
My knowledge of astrology from books for many decades was garnered mainly from Hindi books published in Varanasi and Bombay’s Venkatesh Press. I never read any book of Dr.Raman as late as 1971, at the age of forty, because my mother had told me about his unacceptable ayanamsha. Besides, we did not have in the collection of astrology books of my mother, books of Dr. Raman. My mother’s personal collection was mostly in Telugu and that also well known astrological books, rarely anyone of contemporary writers of India who wrote in English though her knowledge of English was excellent she being the daughter of a headmaster during British rule. Those days the medium of teaching was through
English which was taught very well.
The quality of Varanasi books My knowledge of astrology came from books in Hindi. Let me state here that the books of Varanasi which are what many pandits compiled from whatever manuscripts they could lay their hands on, were uncritical combinations of the sublime and the dross, some gems and some folksy superstitions which could be a better subjects for anthropogists than astrologers.
It was much later that I learnt from some very respectable astrologers who used to come to meet my mother that these compilers of the differering versions of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra etc. were mere theoreticians and poorest of predictors. That has been the well known limitation of many astrologers brought up in Sanskrit traditions, to whom we are grateful for making available to us these compilations. Yet, to accept their interpretations and even translations blindly is to ignore their terrible limitations. Sample some out of hundreds of such instances.
1) If Sun is in the twelfth house for Tula lagna, he will live for one hundred years is one such absurdity.
2) In dasha results of Vimshottari , if Venus or Mercury is in the sixth or eighth from Sun the results will be....such absurdities abound in these books.
3) Try the garbhadhan lagna (prenatal horoscope) given in these books and you will find that some of us had emerged out of the wombs of our mothers either in seven months or ten months and never in the normal period of nine months or eighth months and some days !!
4) If your lagna falls in 3,6,12 etc. from pranpada you are not a human being but an animal!!
5) Read the book carefully and you will find that women are only sexual objects which can be better judged through thrimshamsha!
Try these and you like me will have admiration for these pandit compilers for giving great books and also get amused by their knowledge of predictive astrology!!
They sprang from a background where the benefits of the liberal education given through English medium which makes us ask questions was totally absent. The habit of questioning authority for a statement and the difficulty of accepting anything unless it is proven made the students who studied through English medium very rational and scientific.
Dr. Raman was a product of such an education like most of us. Dr. Raman knew that some of pandits had good knowledge of astrology but their interpretations of some shlokas and their mangled meaning of some sutras, particularly of Jaimini never proved correct in actual application. A practical approach to astrology with sound predictive technique was what was needed.
It is astrologers brought up in the English medium education who alone could do it and did it. In many private conversations with me till we parted company in 1994, Dr. Raman told me of his experiences.
Reading Dr. Raman’s Books As I said that many people including the late Gopesh Kumar Ojha never accepted the ayanamsha of Dr. Raman because of which his books never attracted me till my jyotish guru,Yogi Bhaskaranandji, told me that Dr. Raman taught astrology scientifically through his books and had a remarkable record of great war time predictions which were world class. Left to myself, I rank Dr. Raman as the second best in the world after the late Hardeo Shastri Trivedi who wrote only in Hindi and was not noticed in the world of astrology and the world for his unbelievably great mundane predictions. Ofcourse I made this assessment after reading the predictions of these great astrologers who remain unrivalled even now.
It is after this that in 1971 I read the old issues of the Astrological Magazine and read some of his books with an open mind. I always found it difficult to accept his explanations because when I recast many of the horoscopes given in his books through Lahiri ayanamsha, I found varga charts showing different planetary positions. But if one were to accept his explanations based mostly on his ayanamsha he could not be faulted for his brilliant logic. I never found him using varga charts which appeared to be a terrible limitation.
Dr Raman’s book on Jaimini In course of time I read his book on Jaimini astrology which again is elementary compared to Hindi books I had already read. There was a difference---he was lucid and illustrative in his explanations which the Varanasi pandits could not do in their vast tomes of compilations because they were awful predictors.
Brahma I had ofcourse differences with Dr. Raman in the definition of Brahma for example which, he insisted must be in the visible half of a horoscope. His explanation of Maheshwara as the eighth lord from atmakaraka works very correctly and his definition of Rudra as the stronger of the two between the second and the eighth lord from the lagna works more brilliantly if you work on Sthira dasha of Jaimini in tracing illnessness and mishappenings in the life of a person. ( See the excellent book on Sthira Dasha by Mrs. Akhila Kumar).
What we owe to Dr. Raman is what cannot be repaid is what my jyotish guru told me. I not merely respected my jyotish guru’s assertion but also have, to date, produced the best paper on him which can be read in the book
Dr. Raman Man and Mission. Destiny chose me to repay the debt we owe to Dr. Raman. My jyotish guru who was alive when my paper was published in 1983, was immensely pleased with me and blessed me. He did say that what I had done for Dr. Raman is what one of his astrology knowing children should have done !!
His books not prescribed by us I never prescribed any of the books of Dr. Raman for our astrology course and never recommend it even now. That ofcourse does not diminish the great respect I have for him for making it possible for a man like me to walk on a stage of astrology he prepared ---and prepared for hundreds of astrologers.
So ignore this criticism of the ponga pandit indulging in sutra chopping and proving nothing through any illustration which he has no ability to prove as his elementary discussion of some horoscopes he gives in his massively dull book, shows.
Dr. Raman’s horoscope During his lifetime Dr. Raman had to face lot of jealousy and at the height of some attack on him I had said that astrologers should compare their horoscopes with Dr. Raman’s to see why his destiny bestowed on his the eminence he enjoyed. One of his peevish critics was R.Santhanam and the other is alive even now. I too am a critic not of Dr. Raman but of his ayanamsha.
Remember Dr. Raman gratefully. My writing this piece is because of the provocation of this ponga pandit that Dr. Raman did not know Jaimini astrology properly !!And I am doing it in the month of his birth, August.
Dr. Raman brought astrology back to us from the morass of confused pandits who claimed to be belonging to some parampara and looked astrology look like black magic which failed more often than worked.
AK-Moon, AmK-Sun, BK-Mars, MK-Mercury, PK-Jupiter, GK-Saturn, DK-Venus
( 26 August 2009) He died in the sthira dasha of Meena which is eighth from his Karakamsha. The antardasha of Vrishchika which has Maheshwara. Pratyantara dasha of Simha which has Rudra.
What Dr. Raman learnt from some pandit was better Jaimini astrology than what the sutra choppers mistaking themselves as authorities on Jaimini will ever understand.
In chara dasha as I do, the period of death came in Karka (aspected byMaheshwara, Mesha (aspected by Rudra) and Karka again aspected by Maheshwara.
I do not take any dasha balance in Chara dasha nor did Dr. Raman.
In Vimshottari dasha it was VenusVenus, the seventh dasha and in the seventh house, pratyantara dasha of Saturn aspected by Jupiter the second lord, and the sookshma dasha of Rahu in the second house and aspected by Jupiter again.
In one issue of the Astrological Magazine I had predicted the period from 1994 to 1996 as bad for him and he died two years later after falling ill in the period pointed out by me. I had ofcourse used the horoscope as here too on the basis of his birth time he had rectified himelf.
His atmakaraka is Moon, Maheshwara is Jupiter and Rudra is Mercury according to the method learnt by Dr. Raman from a pandit which is what the ponga disputed.
He died on December 20, 1998 On the day of his death, Mars was in the Eighth house from his lagna and Moon was in the eighth house from his birth Moon.
Remember, what Dr. Raman taught is scientific astrology like what we teach in the Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan but are neither prescribing his books nor using his ayanamsha.
But our respect for him does not suffer in view of his great contribution to Hindu astrology through English language.
HISTORIC DAYS IN A NATION'S HISTORY - BABRI MASJID
Let me start with a friend told me when I was in government service. The government of India had appointed a commission of inquiry which was never submitting its report and demanding extension after extension. The solution was found when the government decided to allot a house to the chairman of the commission with the permission to retain it after the commission closed down !!
Similar jokes will be heard about the Liberhan Commission which submitted its report to the government of India to allow, it is being said, the UPA government headed by the Congress party to proceed against BJP and other Hindu parties to please Muslims for coming assembly elections and take away the remnants of the Muslim vote banks of smaller parties like the BSP of Mulayam Singh and BSP of Mayawati.
Some facts about the Liberhan Commission are being talked of by the television channels. It has taken seventeen years to submit its report after taking 48 extensions after it was set up ten days after the demolition of the Babri Masjid on 6 December 1992 1993. It cost eight crore rupees, had 400 sittings . It will indict, it is being said, L.K.Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharati among the famous names.
Lord Rama went into exile for fourteen years but this commission has taken seventeen years to submit its report!!
My private joke always has been that the BJP should not fight for Ram temple till it gets new leaders with different leaders as all the three top leaders then Atal Behari Vajpai (representing Krishna) Lal Krishna Advani representing Krishna) and Murli Manohar Joshi (representing Krishna) are fighting for Rama temple ! They do not have "Ram" in their names. Vinay Katiyar and Ashok Singhal have neither Rama nor Krishna, like many others in their names !! Even the second rank leaders do not have Rama in their names.
My more serious argument which two women students presented in a seminar in 2001 with astrological proofs of the existing of a Hindu temple in Ayodhya even in the eleventh century. And that most of the history of ancient countries have many legends which get historical approval. See this (story or fiction or fact ?)
Mohammad’s ascent to heaven !! One night, Muhammad, accompanied by the angel Gabriel, flew on the back of a winged, horse-like creature to Jerusalem to visit the temple that was built by King Solomon (who, by the way, is also considered to be one of the prophets). At the Temple, Muhammad prayed with Abraham, Moses and Jesus. Muhammad was then carried up to heaven by Gabriel, where Muhammad met God. Because of this trip, Moslems consider Jerusalem to be the third most holy city, after Mecca and Medina. Within Jerusalem lies one of Islam's most holy sites, the Dome of the Rock, which covers the place where Muhammad is said to have stepped as he began his ascent to heaven. During the Night Journey, Muhammad was told several tenets that he incorporated into the basis of Islam, for example, that all Moslems should pray five times a day.
Has anyone made it a historical controversy and deprived Muslims from visiting this "historical" place?
Babri Masjid Horoscopes
Now come to the astrological significance of 6 December 1992 and the demolition of the Babri Masji which , it is well known was a deserted mosque. It is very well known that Hindus have associated this place with Lord Rama which is why Muslims destroyed the temple there and built a mosque as they have done in Mathura and Varanasi. But the Congress party must ignore this , the BJP does not advance this as an argument and Hindus, even those who have nothing to do with politics want to see a Rama temple so sacred to us in Ayodhya referred to in the Valmiki Ramayana. India’s Congress Party contains world’s greatest hypocrites.
It is also well known that Christians first and later Muslims destroyed the places of worship of other religions to proclaim their supremacy and converted and proselyted people. Powerful hypocrites escaped punishment is the history of religions !!
But God must be laughing at these philistines pretending to be angels and His messengers on this planet of ours.
6 December 1992Now come to the 6 December 1992 demolition of the Masjid and see it astrologically. December 6 was a Sunday and I was in Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan along with David Frawley from USA who wanted to see our teaching methods and was attending one of my classes. Another teacher rushed to my room and said that the students wanted to know why and how the Babri Masjid was demolished and wanted it to be explained astrologically. There was a great and insistent demand. I combined the classes and explained with Frawley listening to me.
See the horoscope of the time and day of the demolition given here.
1) There is the exchange of the third lord (representing karsevaks or the volunteers kar being hand with which service is rendered) and the sixth house being aggression.
2) The fourth and ninth lord Venus here is the Masjid the ninth lord in the twelfth house is the place of worship. It is under double affliction , is with Saturn and is aspected by Mars.
3) Rahu Ketu axis falls in Vrisha – Vrischika (Taurus– Scorpio) which historically (see Mehta and Radhika’s book on recently released book on Mundane Astrology) is a significant period in the history of India like the Karka (Cancer) and Makar (Capricorn) axis where Rahu Ketu are these days and on the days of the submission of the report of Liberhan Commission. Wait for the fall out of today’s development which the Congress party will exploit and annoy Hindus who do want to see a Rama temple in Ayodhya without politicizing the issue.
The Indian Independence horoscopeNow put the planets of 6 Dec 1992 on the horoscope of India and see how Saturn in the ninth house of religion aspected by Jupiter from Kanya (Virgo) completes a double transit phenomenon with fiery Mars Karka (Cancer) igniting it !
To test this theory further put the planets of 11 September 2001 on the horoscope of USA with Simha lagna when the tower in New York was destroyed. The explanation is given in the margin of the chart. Try Vrischika (Scorpio) or Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna and this double transit phenomenon does not work.
Now watch the repercussions of all this more keenly because the eclipse of 22 July is falling on the three-nine axis of the Indian Independence horoscope. That is again history in the making.
That is astrology of Hindus.

MUHURAT
Building and Launching Ships. - The constellations Jyeshta. Makha, Visakha, Aridra, Rohini, Bharani, Knttika and Aslesha should be avoided. The remaining ones are auspicious. Sunday, Thursday and Friday are good. Let the Lagna be a watery sign. Place the lord of Lagna in the 9th or 11th house. The lord of Janma Rasi should be in a watery sign. Avoid movable signs. Let there be no planet in 8th house. In building ships for war, strengthen the position of Mars; In building merchant and passenger ships, see that. Mercury is dignified or at least occupies an Upachaya sign free from affliction. Either Venus or Jupiter should be in a kendra or trikona. The conjunction of Mars and Moon and Mars and Lagna or Lagnadhipathi should be avoided.
Building Towns and Cities. - The foundation stone should be laid at an auspicious moment as per rules given in the chapter on House Building. The best asterisms for laying the foundation for building a town are Aswini, Chitta and Revati. The Lagna must be a fixed sign powerful ly aspected by Jupiter. This gives durability and continuance. Place Mercury in an auspicious position. This makes the city grow into a big trading centre. Confine Saturn to an Upachaya. Mars should have no connection with the Lagna. Have the construction begun when the Moon is increasing in light? Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are good. Movable signs should be avoided. Benefic planets should be in Lagna, the 2nd and the 9th houses. Malefics should be in 3rd and 11th houses. The 8th should be vacant as also the 12th. But a benefic in the 12th is permissible.
Building Military Quarters. - The constellation of Uttarabhadra is the best for beginning the construction of military quarters or barracks.
Dairy Farms. - Let Taurus or Cancer be the rising sign. Aswini, Punarvasu, Pushya. dasta, Swati, Sravana, Dhanishta and Satabhisha are the best Nakshatras. The presence of the Moon in Lagna augurs prosperity. Monday is the best weekday.
Electing Head of the State. - The best constellations areAswinr. Rohini, Mrigasira, Punarvasu, Pushya. Uttara, Hasta, Anuradha. Uttarashadha, Sravana. Uttarabhadra and Revati. All odd lunar days (in the bright half) except the 9th are good. The 2nd and 10th lunar days are also favourable. The rising sign must be Aries. Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius or Pisces.
Strengthen the Sun and the Moon. Fortify the Lagna and the 10th and their lords. Let the 8th house be vacant. Confine malefics to Upachayas. If possible, the Sun and the Moon should be placed in Cancer or Leo preferably subject to the aspect of Jupiter. As usual, the Tarabala, Chandrabala, Panchaka, etc., should be carefully looked into.
Coronation. - The foregoing rules apply to coronation also. If possible, let Lagna be Leo occupied by the Sun and aspected by Jupiter. In case of democratic rule, the new Government may begin at a time when Kumbha is rising with Saturn in Lagna or in Thula aspected in either case by Jupiter or Venus.
Installing a Deiiy. - Building temples and installing deities involve the consideration of very important astrological principies which an average student of astrology will be unable to understand thoroughly. Therefore, selection of an auspicious moment for such purposes may well be left to a specialist. There are complicated astronomical, astrological and religious rules given in original Works and the reader Will do well to refer to such works as Brihat Samhits, Kalamrita. etc., for greater details. Here I shall give just a few salient principles.
The installation of a deity should be done when the Sun is in the Northern course. The lunar month of Magha should be avoided. According to Kalaprakasika, the ceremony is to be done when Jupiter and Venus are dignified and devoid of adverse influences.
Rohini, Mrigasira. Punarvasu, Pushya, Uttara, Hasta, Swati, Uttarashadha and Uttarabhadra are good constellations for this purpose. All odd lunar days (except the 9th) including the 2nd, 6th and 10th are favourable. The Lagna must be a fixed sign. A common sign may be selected for a female Deity. Movable signs should always be rejected. The Lagna should not be conjoined by the luminaries or malefics or otherwise the town concerned will be destroyed. No malefic should occupy the 7th. There should be no planet in the 8th. The ceremony should be avoided at the end of an Ayana, the end of a year, of a lunar day and of an asterism; and on days on which halos round the Sun and the Moon are visible.
CHAPTER XVIIMiscellaneous Elections
In the foregoing chapters elections bearing upon almost all human activities have been clearly described. In this chapter I propose to deal with a few more important ones bearing upon sports, law-suits, prisoners and war.
Lotteries and Competitions. - Success in lotteries and competitions generally depends upon the strength of the birth horoscope in regard to the house of finance and the nature of the directional influences at the time concerned. Therefore, much reliance cannot be placed on the strength of election in. regard to chance-games.
Aswini, Bharani, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitta, Visakha, Poorvashadha and Revati are excellent for entering into competitions. The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 11th and 13th lunar days are good. All weekdays are suitable except Tuesday and Saturday. Let the Lagna belong to a benefic planet. Fortify the Moon and the 5th and the 9th houses. Avoid the 11th lord in the 12th and Mars in the 8th. Saturn should cast no aspect either on the 2nd house or on the 2nd lord.
Horse Races. - Here again the birth chart is important. Horses are said to be governed by Aswini. This constellation therefore is fortunate for purchasing and training horse for race purposes. Krittika, Mrigasira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Uttarabhadra, Hasta, Swati, Visakha, Anuradha and Dhanishta are also good. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are favourable. If you want to run a horse for a race, place Sagittarius in Lagna and strengthen the 10th house.
Filing Law-suits. - Avoid the usual unfavourable lunar days. Aswini, Rohini, Mrigasira, Pushya, Uttara, Hasta, Chitta, Anuradha, Dhanishta and Revati are good. Tuesday and Saturday should be avoided. Strengthen the Lagna by placing Jupiter in a Trikona. Let there be no malefic in the 6th house. The lords of Lagna and the 6th should be as far apart as possible. The Lagna or at least the Navamsa must be Aries in order to assure success to the litigation. If benefics occupy kendras or occupying the male signs, have beneficial aspects, there will be peace between the parties.
Seeking Escaped Prisoners. - Saturday, Monday and Tuesday are favourable weekdays. Aswini, Rohini, Aridra, Aslesha, Pubba, Chitta, Visakha, Moola, Uttarashadha and Revati are auspicious. The Lagna must be in a movable sign aspected or occupied by Mercury or Moon. The 6th lord should occupy the 11th and be free from affliction. See that the Moon does not occupy the 12th in conjunction with any other planet. Make the Sun weak. If possible, let Rahu or Ketu be posited in Lagna. Parivarthana or exchange of house between lords of Lagna and the 7th is also desirable.
Buying Arms. - The most favourable constellations are Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitta, Rohini, Mrigasira, Visakha, Anuradha, Jyeshta, Uttara, Uttarashadha, Uttarabhadra, Revati and Aswini. Avoid Riktha Tithis the 4th. 9th and 14th lunar days. Sunday, Thursday and Friday are auspicious. Some works recommend Tuesday also as favourable. A martian sign must be rising, or culminating and Mars must be in a dignified position.
Starting Wars. - Several standard works on Muhurtha do not specially mention the constellations, etc., suitable for starting wars. Planetary combinations for the defeat of the enemy are given. However, by a reference to relevant literature on the subject, we have been able to gather the following information. War must be started on a day ruled by Aswini, Bharani, Krittika, Aridra, Aslesha, Makha, Pubba, Chitta, Jyeshta, Satabhisha and Revati. Of the lunar days except the 4th, 9th and 14th the rest are said to be fortunate. Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday are supposed to ensure victory.
In our humble view if Tuesday is selected Mars must be rendered strong.
The enemy is said to retreat in confusion if the war is begun in a Chara Lagna when the Moon occupies a fixed sign. The enemy is also said to retreat early if the Lagna is Aries, Leo, Taurus and Sagittarius. There should be no conjunction of or aspect between Mars and Saturn if great mortality and bloodshed are to be avoided. Mars should be elevated preferably if the 7th house or the meridian unaspected by any other malefic. The Lagna must, as usual, be strong.
Destroying Strongholds. - Let a fiery sign be rising with Mars posited in or aspecting Lagna. A strong-hold besieged under the influence of Aries is bound to fall early. Similarly, Sagittarius ascending with Mars in it would render the collapse of any stronghold inevitable.
Making Peace. - This is an important item in the lives of nations. Peace must be under a strong influence of Jupiter. The ascending sign and amsa must be either Pisces or Taurus or Virgo. Benefics should be strongly placed. Saturn must be either in the 12th or in Upachaya. There should be no conjunction between Mars and Rahu or Mars and Saturn or Rahu and Saturn. The signatories to the Peace Treaty must themselves have their horoscopes harmoniously disposed. The constellations of Mrigasira, Chitta, Dhanishta, Aridra, Swati, Satabhisha, Anuradha and Uttarabhadra should be avoided, as also the 4th. 7th, 8th, 9th and 12th lunar days and New and Full Moon days. Peace made under the following combinations is said to last for a long time: -
(1) The Moon should be in the 10th house, Jupiter in the 4th and Mars and Saturn in the 11th (Mars and Saturn should not be in conjunction).
(2) Jupiter should be in Lagna, Mercury in the 7th, Saturn in the 3rd, the Sun in the 6th and Venus in the 4th.
(3) Jupiter should be in the 5th from Lagna (which should be Taurus). Sun in the 3rd and Mars in the 6th.
(4) Mercury in Lagna, Jupiter in the 7th and the Moon in the 10th.
(5) Jupiter in Lagna (which should be a fixed sign). Mercury in the 7th and the Moon in the 10th.
Will our statesmen pay heed to the astrological counsel and try these simple astrological rules and rid the world of perpetual threat to Peace?
The conceit of modern progress has no more respect for ancient ideas then for the forgotten civilizations of old, even though in many essentials they have anticipated or outstripped all that we boast of.
CHAPTER XVIIISummary
In the last seventeen chapters, we have been able to cover almost all the Important aspects of Muhurtha, a branch of astrology which is still very popular, amongst all sections of people not only in India but in other parts of the world too.
The rationale of Muhurtha consists in appreciating the importance of the time-factor in all human undertakings. It is an admitted fact that all source of life and terrestrial activities is the Sun. Forces emanating from thit glorious body vary in intensity and influence as a result of their contact with other celestial bodies. Man is himself a bundle of electrical currents and therefore there is always a sort of interaction between planetary forces and those incessantly radiated by man. By Muhurtha is meant that valuable moment when there is the greatest harmony or resonance between human and stellar radiations.
Horoscopy is diagnostic. Muhurtha is preventive on prescriptive. It sets at naught the theory of absolute determinism and gives scope for the display of volition within reasonable limits. Therefore even if afitictions exist in the birth horoscope they can be neutralised or at least lessened by recourse to Muhurtha.
Muhurtha takes into cognizance the importance of the radical Moon as he indicates the mind and alt our psychological inhibitions. Hence almost every election is to be so timed as to have reference to the birth star and consequently to the birth Moon. Janma Tara is the ruling constellation while Janma Rasi means the zodiacal sign occupied by the Moon at the time of one's birth.
In electional astrology, the Panchanga, made up as it is of five important astrological limbs, is of great significance. The Panchanga consists of (1) Tithi, (2) Vara, (3) Nakshatra, (4) Yoga and (5) Karana.
The Tithi is the lunar day. This can be known thus: Subtract the longitude of the Sun from that of the Moon in degrees at a given time. Divide the remainder by 12 and the quotient plus one will be the current tilhi. The remainder when subtracted from 12 and divided by the diurnal motion in degrees will give in day the time at which the lunar day will change. Vara is of course the usual weekday commencing from Sunday and ending with Saturday. The Nakshatra is the ruling constellation. This can be ascertained thus: - Reduce the position of the "Moon into minutes and divide it by 800. The quotient represents the past nakshatra and the remainder ait portion of trie next star. Then we have the Yoga which may be obtained thus: - Take the position of the Sun and the Moon and divide it by the sum of their motions. The quotient as usual represents the past yoga. Then we have the last limb, viz., Karana or haif a lunar day. There are 27 Nakshatras, 27 Yogas and 11 Karanas.
In Muhurtha, the pride of place is always given to Nakshatra. Vara and Tithi. The other two limbs whilst no doubt important in their own way are in actual practice of secondary value.
In selecting auspicious times, due notice must be taken of the purpose in view. Each human activity requires the strengthening of a particular house or signification or the presence of a particular type of combination.
Rasis and constellations have their negative periods also. Such periods, should be rejected in all good works. Tuesday and Saturday are invariably bad for all auspicious works. There are certain exceptions for this general rule. For instance, Tuesday is good for surgical operations.
The most important factors to be considered are the Tarabala or strength of constellation. Chandrabala: or lunar strength and the Panchaka or the strength of the sum-total of five kinds of energies called into play at a particular moment. In all these cases there are exceptions to be noted. Hence, in the election of a Muhurtha, one should be very careful. Each constellation has its own role to play as suitable for a certain type of activity. In fact, Pushyami is considered a constellation par excellence. It could be employed for all purposes but not for marriage.
There are twenty-one great evils (Mahadoshas) being the resultant of the operation of the various forces. As many of these doshas as possible must be avoided. Of these, Kujashtana and Bhrigushataka are definitely harmful for marriage while the others are equally evil in respect of other elections. One important consideration should weigh with the Astrologer, viz., that the force of good must supersede those of evil for an absolutely good Muhurtha is inconceivable. Several combinations and exceptions are given which would render the forces of evil either null and void or less harmful. For instance, do day of the week is blemished provided the lord thereof is strongly placed. A benefic exalted in Lagna should nullify all other adverse influences, if the kendras are fortified, sources of evil are considerably lessened.
A certain weekday coinciding with a certain lunar day and constellation constitutes a special Yoga capable of generating very good influences. For example, Thursday identical with the 4th lunar day and the constellation Makha gives rise to Siddha Yoga, a highly favourable combination. These special influences merit the attention of a student of Muhurtha.
Of the Shodasa Karmas (16 kinds of ceremonies) prescribed for the Hindu, excepting a few, the vest are common to persons of all castes; creeds and nationalities and they are therefore of universal application. Nishekam or the first sexual act is astrologically very significant for *"not only do the radiations from these stars exercise an influence on the animal and human embryo but, since all substance, living or inert, is constituted of elections which are materialised radiations, the formation of all organic beings on earth depends directly on the influence of these radiations on the human egg at the moment of conception".
* La Grand Problem by Lakhovsky
The ancients have also hinted at the possibility of change of sex by having the ceremony of Pumsavana done when the foetus has attained a certain age. Of the post-natal ceremonies. Upanayana is very important. Fixing a suitable time for this ceremony is indeed highly difficult. This should be left to be done by an expert until the student has gained sufficient experience which could enable him to do the work independently.
In regard to marriage, the following suggestions may be carefully noted: -
(1) Do not begin the comparison of horoscopes without testing the correctness of the castings submitted.
(2) Examine the longevity of the bridegroom and the bride. If short life is indicated either for the bride or for the bridegroom do not recommend the match unless there are neutralising influences in either of the horoscopes.
(3) The 7th and 8th houses should be carefully examined. When there are many afflictions, carefully find out if there are neutralising influences also. Otherwise reject the match.
(4) The first condition is the inherent strength of the horoscope. Next in importance comes the question of examining marriage adaptability.
(5) A girl belonging to Rakshasa Gana should not be married to a boy belonging to Manusha of Deva Gana. The reverse condition is recommended.
(6) In examining Graha Maitra which is the sins qua non of marriage stability, consideration should be had not only to the Janma Rasis of the couple but to the Janma Navamsa also. When Graha Maitra does not exist according to Janma Rasi, then the latter must be considered. Under certain conditions (p. 91) even want of Graha Maitra can be ignored. All these have to be carefully looked into before pronouncing an opinion. The common Janma Nakshatra factor presents many difficulties for a beginner in astrology. The subtle distinctions bearing on this consideration should be carefully grasped. Then there is, the question of Ku]a Dosha about which much fuss is being made in this part of India. No horoscope should be rejected unless it has been examined from all astrological angles.
(7) If the girl and the boy have their 5th houses considerably afflicted, then marriage between them Is not desirable. But much of the evil due to these radical dispositions can be ovecome by selecting a proper Muhurtha.
(8) *"In the beginning of your literary attempts in the astrological field do not be-over-confident or hasty in having properly understood the principles explained here. Refer your knowledge to some gentlemen who have much experience in these matters and whose opinions you ought to value and compare with your inferences and personal experiences".
* The Astrological Mirror by Prof. B. Suryanarain Rao
(9) In marriages, there should be no three or more Jyeshtas. The eldest son or daughter is called a Jyeshta. There is the lunar month of Jyeshta and the constellation of Jyeshta. Therefore the marriage of an eldest son or daughter should not be done in the constellation of Jyeshta and the lunar month of Jyeshta. Similarly if the bride and bridegroom happen to be Jyeshtas the marriage should not be celebrated either in the month of Jyeshta or in the constellation of Jyeshta.
(10) In fixing a Muhurtha for marriage, keep the 7th house clean, and 6th and 8th unoccupied by Venus and Mars respectively. Jupiter's presence in a kendra or trikona is very desirable.
(11) When birth data are not available. take the Nama Nakshatra (see Appendix) of the couple. The name of an individual's made up of letters or aksharas, by which is meant indestructible forms of sound vibrations, and when you consider a name, you are only measuring the energy content of the individual.
(12) Parents waste huge sums on Marriage Shows such as dinners, music, jewels and pandals but they are niggardly in paying proper remuneration to a deserving astrologer who could fix up a really auspicious moment. It astrological consultation is not to be a matter of formality but of serious importance, then the learned astrologer should be paid properly. A proper Muhurtha will ensure the future of the couple and anything expended towards this item is well spent. If without caring to consult an expert astrologer, the marriage is done and it proves a failure, then all the energy and finance spent would be a sheer waste. Hence it is very necessary that an expert astrologer is pressed into service.
General elections given in Chapter XIV comprehend very important human activity and as far as possible due attention must be paid to the astrological factors either in regard to going on a,journey or starting a business or for doing any important work. Auspicious times for day-to-day activities can be fixed by any amateur astrologer.
Astrology, in relation to house building is a very important subject, as it takes into account factors which the architect and the engineer generally ignore. Materials assembled for the construction of a building radiate different kinds of energies some good, some indifferent and some definitely harmful. Force of evil accruing from such sources can be tapped off by laying the foundation-stone and entering the new house at propitious moments. An amateur astrologer should not rake the responsibility of doing this job as it pre-supposes very intimate knowledge of Vastu Sastra.
In the matter of Travel or Yatra, Krittika, Bharani and the lunar days of Ashtami and Navami should be invariably avoided. Journeys are also prohibited towards different directions on different weekdays. There are exceptions for such rules in cases of emergency. In selecting a suitable day for travel, a good lunar day, a favourable constellation and a well-fortified Lagna merit one's foremost attention. For short journeys existence of Tarabala is enough. For going on pilgrimages or important errands, a very suitable day has to be fixed by taking due note of all the important astrological factors.
The medical elections are intended to ensure speedy recovery from illness. There is a striking correspondence between the lunar movements and crises in certain types of disease and this gives a clue as to why a suitable time should be secured to commence treatment for long-standing diseases and surgical operations. Generally Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday coinciding with Hasta, Aswini. China and Punarvasu respectively would be highly favourable to begin treatment for recurrent fevers and chronic diseases. The time becomes specially propilious if in addition to the above the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus occupy their own vargas and a movable Rasi is ascending in Amsa.
Elections bearing on public matters are of dubious value in view of the current prejudicial official attitude entertained towards astrology. Vet, as in actual practice, astrologers are being consulted in private for official purposes, the rules bearing on elections pertaining to public affairs are bound to be of some value. It is hoped the day is not far off when astrology is given its due by the State and recognised as the science par excellence for the solution of national and international problems. This expectation on our part may induce a derisive laugh from "men of sobriety" whose habit of thinking is confined to a limited horizon. But we are bold enough to say that astrology when properly pressed into the service of the State would be far more useful in preventing national and international complications than all the paraphernalia now employed by the civilised Governments all over the world.
Concluding Remarks
Muhurtha is not the penance for all the ills afflicting a horoscope. Muhurtha or an auspicious moment can neutralise to a certain extent the afflictions existing in a birth chart as affecting the various events.
If marital harmony is completely absent in a birth chart, Muhurtha cannot confer on the native marital harmony. It reduces the sources of friction to a certain extent.
Of the different limbs of the panchanga, viz., tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana, the nakshatra is very important. If suppose for a marriage, the tithi is the 6th and the nakshatra is Sadhana, then the day can be selected. This is the view of sage Brihaspati and hence acceptable to the other sages. But even if other factors such as tithi, nakshatra. etc., are defective, a strong Lagna can neutralise such defects. This is the view of Narada and we concur with this view. But recourse should be had to this contingency only under special circumstances, e.g., when a Muhurtha is to be fixed, say for accommodating a bridegroom coming from a foreign country, who has to get back quickly.
According to Roua, Jupiter should be rendered strong for marriage; Venus for travel; Mercury for learning; Mars for war, fighting; the Sun for meeting with the rulers, government officers, etc., and the Moon in respect of all elections.
Abhijin Muhurtha (midday) could be fixed for all elections, in case a really auspicious time is not available. Add half duration of the day to sunrise and the Abhijin Muhurtha is obtained. Suppose sunrise is at 6-10 a.m. (IST) and sunset 6-45 p.m. The interval is 12 hours 30 minutes. Half this, viz., 6 hours 15 minutes added to time of sunrise, viz., 6-10 (1ST) gives the Abhijin Muhurtha as 6 hours 10 minutes + 6 hours 15 minutes = 12 hours 25 minutes.
According to Sage Bharadwaja a fully flawless Muhurtha is unthinkable for years. Therefore, fix up an auspicious time, with less doshas and more gunas. Even sage Narada says: Avoiding heavy afflictions (mahadoshas), and considering the ordinary gunas and doshas, fix an auspicious time with more gunas. That moment proves auspicious.
And always see that Jupiter or Venus is in conjunction with the ascendant or at least in a kendra or the trine so that all doshas are rendered infructuous.
The sages appear to have taken a very liberal view of things especially in regard to marriage. For instance they say that if the boy and the girl like each other in their first meeting, that should also receive first consideration - (...) And when doubts arise between views of different astrologers about the agreement of horoscopes, we are asked to have recourse to nimitta (omens) and clinch the issue.
The outstanding exponent of astrology in 20th century was my revered grandfather the late Prof. B. Suryanarain Rao, a great historian, savant, linguist and philosopher. Prof. Rao successfufly defended astrology against the attacks of ill-informed critlcs most of whom belonged to the so-called "educated" classes. I conclude this work with the following extract from the late Professor's The Astrological Mirror:
"To despise to hold a bright lamp in the darkness indicates stupidity, while to try to secure it at any cost and hold the same to shed light on our future path really shows consummate wisdom. Choose your own lot as you please, and either control the planets and stand a victor in the struggle for existence and comfort or yield to their evil influences without personal exertions on your part and be a miserable coward."
Om Tat Sat
The Shaktis of the Nakshatras
Each Nakshatra has its particular power or Shakti. These are also the powers of the Devatas or the deities ruling the Nakshatras. Each of these Shaktis has its effect above and its effect below, and the final result of these three factors. The imagery is of common factors of plants, healing, worship, marriage and death.
This is a teaching that derives from an ancient Vedic text called Taittiriya Brahmana I.5.1 and from the commentary of Bhattabhaskara Mishra. The first paragraph relates to the textual reference. The second paragraph consists of my own comments based upon it.
Ashwini
Ashwini is govern by the Ashwins, the twin horsemen. It has the power to quickly reach things (shidhra vyapani shakti). Its basis above are the creatures to be healed. Its basis below is the healing therapies. From these three the entire world becomes free of disease.
Ashwini Nakshatra brings about quick aid and energization. The healing power of Ashwini is evident from these comments, particularly their ability to bring about fast, radical or miraculous cures as well as rejuvenation. The Ashwins are forces of Prana or the life-force, which is quick in its action to stimulate, help, and initiate a new level of activity.
Bharani
Bharani is ruled by Yama, the God of Death. It has the power to take things away (apabharani shakti). Its basis above is the removal of life from the body. Its basis below is the carrying of the soul to the realm of the ancestors. By the combination of these three factors creatures move on to the next world.
Bharani Nakshatra takes away that which has reached its term of life to a new condition. It shows the movement of the soul away from the body. Yama guides the soul to the astral plane, where it can experience the result of its karma from the present life and prepare for the life to come. Yama is a figure of discipline and sacrifice.
Krittika
Krittika is ruled by Agni, the God of Fire. It has the power to burn (dahana shakti). Its basis above is heat and below is light. The result of these three is burning or purification.
Krittika Nakshatra burns up negativity, purifies what is mixed, and cooks or prepares that which is not yet ripe. Agni is mainly the God of the sacred fire, so purification is perhaps the dominant action, not destruction, though purification does involve the destruction of impurity. Agni is also the fire that cooks our food and so there is a nourishing side to its effects as well. This fire has a childlike nature.
Rohini
Rohini is ruled by Prajapati, the Creator. Its power is growth (rohana shakti). Its basis above is the plants and below is the waters. The result of these three is creation.
Rohini Nakshatra allows for growth and creation on all levels, bestowing great fertility. However it also evokes some degree of jealousy because others may resent that a person gains such abundance. More over it can increase desire. But these are only side effects to its great prosperity. Prajapati is the creator who can bestow everything so we should be careful what we want.
Mrigashirsha
Mrigashirsha is ruled by Soma, the God of the Moon or the immortal nectar. Its power is giving fulfillment (prinana shakti). Its basis above is extension. Its basis below weaving (producing clothing). These three together make the world enjoyable.
Mrigashirsha Nakshatra fills or covers with joy. It is like a beautiful cloth to make our life more attractive. Soma is a great enjoyment that is won, conquered, bought or stolen, so its procurement does not always come easily. However what does not require effort to gain is not always enjoyed either.
Ardra
Ardra is ruled by Rudra, the fierce form of Lord Shiva who represents thunder. Its power is effort (yatna shakti), particularly for making gains in life. Its basis above is hunting or searching. Its basis below is reaching the goal. These three bring about achievement.
Ardra Nakshatra arouses us to greater effort in life. This struggle can bring great rewards but not without persistence and a degree of luck. Rudra is the hunter and the wielder of the bow. The idea here also suggests placing of the arrow and hitting the target. For this one must have a good aim, as well as strength to shoot. Rudra is also the lord of wild animals.
Punarvasu
Punarvasu is ruled by Aditi, the Great Mother Goddess. Its power is the ability to gain wealth or substance (vasutva prapana shakti). Its basis above is the wind or air. Its basis below is wetness or rain. These three bring about the revitalization of the plants.
Punarvasu Nakshatra brings about the return of energy and vitality, like the return of the monsoon rains after the dry season. It causes our creative growths and inspirations to be renewed. Aditi is the Earth Goddess who grants all abundance and gives birth to all the Gods.
Pushya
Pushya is ruled by Brihaspati, the God of Divine wisdom. Its power is the ability to create spiritual energy (brahmavarchasa shakti). Its basis above is sacrificial worship. Its basis below is the worshipper. These three result in the creation of spiritual energy.
Pushya Nakshatra increases our good karma and good efforts. The value of this Nakshatra for religious and spiritual practices is emphasized. Brihaspati is the lord of speech, particularly prayer, and of all forms of worship, including meditation, so these indications are all in harmony with his functions.
Aslesha
Aslesha is ruled by the serpent God. It has the power to inflict with poison (visasleshana shakti). Its basis above is the approach of the serpent. Its basis below is trembling and agitation. These three together bring about destruction of the victim.
Aslesha Nakshatra paralyzes the enemy. This can be helpful if we have enemies but it can serve to give a person an inimical temperament as well. It all depends upon how the energy of this Nakshatra is used. Serpents also give wisdom, but a practical wisdom through which one can overcome enemies and obstacles.
Magha
Magha is ruled by the Ancestors. It gives the power of to leave the body (tyage kshepani shakti). Its basis above is mourning. Its basis below is leaving the body. These three together bring about death.
Magha Nakshatra causes a change of state or condition, a kind of death. Usually it shows that we are coming to the end of a cycle. Its condition is prior to that of Bharani which indicates the movement of the soul away from the body. Of course there are higher meanings of this Nakshatra relative to Ancestors including ancestral pride and power.
Purva Phalguni
Purva Phalguni in the Vedic order is ruled by Aryaman, the God of contracts and unions. It gives the power of procreation (prajanana shakti). Its basis above is the wife or female partner. Its basis below is the male or masculine partner. These three together bring about the creation of the fetus.
Purva Phalguni brings about union and procreation on all levels. Yet this follows some official agreement or marriage and is part of the creation of a new family or social order. Aryaman governs such productive alliances and also arranges the marriage festival.
Uttara Phalguni
Uttara Phalguni in the Vedic order is ruled by Bhaga, the God of happiness. Its power the giving of accumulation or prosperity (chayani shakti) through marriage or union. Its basis above is the wealth gained from ones own family. Its basis below is the wealth gained from ones partner and her family. These three together bring about the accumulation of wealth.
Uttara Phalguni brings the prosperity that results through union. It indicates both the need for union and for organizing the resources gained through it. Bhaga is also a God of wealth who brings about the right apportionment of resources. While the previous Nakshatra shows marriage this shows the setting up of the household for the newly married couple.
Hasta
Hasta is ruled by Savitar, the creative form of the Sun God. Its power is the ability to gain what we are seeking and place it in our own hands (hasta sthapaniya agama shakti). Its basis above is the seeking of gain. Its basis below is the process of gaining. These three together place what one wishes to gain in ones own hand.
Hasta gives the ability to achieve our goals in a complete and immediate manner. Such goals are usually creative in nature. Savitar is the creative will that builds up the universe with all of its beauty. His productions are most wonderful.
Chitra
Chitra is ruled by Twashtar, the Cosmic craftsman. Its power is ability to accumulate merit in life (punya cayani shakti). Its basis above is the law. Its basis below is the truth. Through these three the worker is able to gain honor in his work.
Chitra allows us to gain the fruit of our good karma that comes through righteousness. It has a highly spiritual energy and effect. Twashtar creates enduring forms, like a blacksmith, and also produces variety and abundance.
Swati
Swati is ruled by Vayu, the God of the Wind. It gives the power to scatter like the wind (pradhvamsa shakti). Its basis above is moving in various directions. Its basis below is change of form. The result of these three is transformation.
Swati Nakshatra causes things to move and scatter. This can be destructive unless we learn how to use it to remove negativity. All these indications are basically those of the Wind, which has both healing and destructive powers.
Vishakha
Vishakha is ruled by Indra and Agni, who represent the powers of heat and lightning in the Atmosphere. It gives the power to achieve many and various fruits in life (vyapana shakti). Its basis above is plowing or cultivation. Its basis below is the harvest. These three gives us the fruit of the harvest.
Vishakha provides the effort to achieve our goals abundantly through time, like a farmer plowing his field. It does not give immediate results but perhaps greater long term gains. Indra and Agni here are agriculture Gods showing the ripening effect of heat, rain and seasonal changes.
Anuradha
Anuradha is ruled by Mitra, the Divine Friend. It gives the power of worship (radhana shakti). Its basis above is ascension. Its basis below is descension. From these three honor and abundance is gained.
Anuradha Nakshatra gives balance in relationship, both honoring others and seeking ourselves to be honorable, through which we acquire fame and recognition. Mitra indicates compassion, devotion and right relationship.
Jyeshta
Jyeshta is ruled by Indra, the ruler of the Gods. It has the power to rise or conquer, and gain courage in battle (arohana shakti). Its basis above is attack and its basis below is defense. The result of these three is that one becomes a hero.
Jyeshta allows us to reach the summit of our personal powers but it requires great courage and effort. It shows karmic battles that require our complete energization in order to overcome. Indra is the king of the Gods who must eventually alone and single handed defeat the dragon, the most fearful of serpents. Though his position looks hopeless, he wins by courage and cunning, not by strength of arms.
Mula
Mula is ruled by Nirriti, the Goddess of destruction. It has the power to ruin or destroy. Its basis above is breaking things apart (barhana shakti). Its basis below is crushing things. Through these three one gains the power to destroy destruction.
In bringing afflictions Mula Nakshatra allows us to destroy their root, as long as they don't overcome us. It shows the necessary destruction to proceed a new creation. Nirriti is Alakshmi or the denial of Lakshmi (abundance and prosperity). She is Kali or the negative effect of time that we must protect ourselves from or use to our advantage.
Purvashadha
Purvashadha is ruled by the Waters (Apas). Its power is that of invigoration (varchograhana shakti). Its basis above is strength. Its basis below is connection. Through these three one gains lustre.
Purvashadha brings about purification and regeneration, like the energy gained through taking a bath in water. It provides us additional energy for our efforts. These effects flow from the Waters, which in this instance are heavenly in nature and can provide inner purification.
Uttarashadha
Uttarashadha is ruled by the Universal Gods (Vishwe Deva). Its power is grant an unchallengeable victory (apradhrisya shakti). Its basis above is the strength to win. Its basis below is the goal that one can win. From these three one becomes the unchallenged winner.
Uttarashadha brings us to the summit of our power, support and recognition, not so much through our personal efforts (which is more the case in Jyeshta) but with the appropriate alliances and support of all the Gods. Our victory depends upon a righteous cause that is beneficial to all, which we are helping in. Here we fight more as the leader of an army.
Shravana
Shravana is ruled by Vishnu, the pervador. Its power is that of connection (samhanana shakti). Its basis above is seeking. Its basis below are the paths. The result of these three is the connection of all things together.
Shravana enables us to link people together by connecting them to their appropriate paths in life. This requires receptivity and listening, and results in understanding and aspiration. Vishnu with his three strides links together the three worlds of Earth, Atmosphere and Heaven, connecting all creatures with the Gods.
Dhanishta
Dhanishta is ruled by the Vasus, the Gods of abundance. Its power is to give abundance and fame (khyapayitri shakti). Its basis above is birth. Its basis below is prosperity. These three give the power to bring people together.
Dhanishta allows us to bring the resources of people together. In this way it builds upon the connections of Shravana and makes them more practical. The Vasus are the deities of the Earth that give abundance on the earthly plane. They are manifestations of Agni or the sacred fire and show the gifts that it can dispense.
Shatabhishak
Shatabhishak is ruled by Varuna, the God of the cosmic waters. It has the power of healing (bheshaja shakti). Its basis above is extension or pervasion over all. Its basis below is the support of all. These three make the world free of calamity.
Shatabhishak counters difficult karmas through Divine grace and repentance. These include not only diseases but difficulties of all kind, including sin. While Ashwini gives more immediate cures, Shatabhishak brings about a healing crisis leading to revitalization. Varuna is a God of sin, debts, injury and disease, who cannot only bring these calamities upon us but can remove them from us, if we propitiate him sincerely.
Purva Bhadra
Purva Bhadra is ruled by Aja Ekapad, the one-footed serpent. It gives the fire to raise a spiritual person up in life (yajamana udyamana shakti). What is good for all people is its basis above. What is good for the Gods is its basis below. These three cause the entire world to be supported.
Purva Bhadra grants a universal view through internal purification. This raises up our spiritual aspiration in life and takes us out of the domain of selfish behavior. Aja Ekapad is the cosmic or celestial form of Agni or the sacred fire. It raises up our spiritual aspiration in life.
Uttara Bhadra
Uttara Bhadra is ruled by Ahir Budhnya, the serpent of the depths of the Atmosphere. Its power is the bringing of the rain (varshodyamana shakti). Its basis above is the raining clouds. Its basis below growing of the plants. From these three factors the three worlds gain their stability.
Uttara Bhadra grants growth and prosperity in a broad way, benefiting the entire world. This makes it very auspicious. Ahir Budhnya is the benefic serpent who brings the rain, connecting us with the creative powers at the foundations of the world.
Revati
Revati is governed by Pushan, the nourishing form of the Sun God. It has the power of nourishment symbolized by milk (kshiradyapani shakti). Its basis above is the cows. Its basis below are the calves. These three bring about the nourishment of the entire world.
Revati creates abundance through providing proper nourishment. It helps all people in their efforts. Pushan is the lord of cattle and the lord of the paths. He leads, protects and gathers the herd in their movement, particularly to new pastures. In this way he also protects the soul in its journey to the next world.

Nadi Dosha
What is Nadi Dosha?
The 3 Nadis represent Vata,Pitta and Kapha respectively. If the prospective Bride and Groom have the same nadi, it is said that their union will be unhappy and conjugal bliss will be absent. One of the partners may even die or they may have to suffer in regard to children. The Term Nadi in Jyotish may be related to Pulse in Ayurveda, which is used to find out diseases in the system. If the bride and groom have different nadis then the children will be born with the appropriate proportion of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, so that they will be possessed of sound health.
Both having Adi Nadi-------- married life is miserable, widowhood or divorce, health disorder are likely.
Both having Madhya Nadi-------one of them may die early.
Both having Antya Nadi----------there may be delay or denial of children.
Cancellation of Nadi Dosha...
1... If the bride and groom are born in the same nakshatras but in different padas, Nadi dosha gets cancelled provided their is no pada-Vedha. That isthey should not have padas in the following order....
I ------ IV or vice-versa
II------ III or vice-versa
However if the Nakshatra padas are in the following order the Marriage should not be avoided on the basis of Nadi dosha.......
I -------- III or vice-versa
II -------- IV or vice-versa
III ------- IV or vice-versa
I --------- II or vice-versa.
2.....If the Moon signs are the same but the nakshatras are different, nadi dosha is cancelled.
3.....If the Moon-signs are adjacent but the Nakshatras are same, Nadi dosha is cancelled.
4.....If the lord of the Moon-signs of both couples be the same planet, that is if ekadhipatya is present, then Nadi Dosha is cancelled.
In other words we can say, if the Nakshatras are the same but the rasis are different OR Rasi is same but the Nakshatras are different OR Both Rasi and the Nakshatras are same but the padas are different OR the Rasis are different but the Rasi lords are the same, then Nadi Dosha becomes ineffective. Astrology is not just a set of some Rules or Slokas.Though Astrology is learnt through rules but applying astrology needs Intuition 90%.And it is found through experience by most successful astrologers that even though all the above conditions of Nadi compatability may not fit in the Horoscopes, strong matching of the following three can nullify even Nadi, Gana and Graha maitri Doshas.
1........ Ascendant compatability,
2........ Graha Compatability,
3........ Bhava Compatability.

INTRODUCTION TO JYOTISH
All of the living or nonliving beings derive the light from the primaeval jyoti, and all events including those belonging to human affairs are placed in relation to the time elapsed since the creation of the universe. No event is isolated or independent in the universe. Mundane application of this vigyan constitutes the popularly known jyotish. Here two aspects have got mixed up: influence of astronomical events and observational correlations of them with human affairs and natural phenomena on earth. A person is believed to be born with the samskaras of past births and vasanas. These are like initial conditions for determining the destiny of the person. Unlike other beings, human beings are endowed with free-will and purushartha. A person can control vasanas and change the course of the trajectory of the destiny by purushartha.
The prevalent system of prescribing rituals to change the effect of planets/stars appears to be a crude and vague form of this principle. Rishis – the seers of truth declare in the Vedas that one’s penetration of vision determines the level of truth one reaches.
